Ensuring Child Safety in Web Portal Services

Making the Internet safe for children to enjoy

Yahoo Japan Corporation

Yahoo! Kids, a portal site designed for children, incorporates a search function for displaying only safe websites as well as providing original contents for children under the categories “Enjoy,” “Get to know” and “Learn.” Yahoo! Kids Study, which was launched in September 2009, provides educational materials to promote the use of the Internet for study at schools and at home.

In addition, Yahoo Japan Corporation offers Yahoo! Safety Net, a filtering service with detailed setting options that can be customized to individual family needs and the stage of child growth. Yahoo! Safety Net includes functions for blocking access to harmful websites and the posting of harmful information on online bulletin boards, as well as restricting browsing of certain types of website and hours of use, and logging a history of websites accessed.

Engaging in educational activities for children, parents and teachers

Yahoo Japan Corporation

Yahoo Japan organizes events and seminars in educational programs aimed at helping parents and teachers to watch and protect children, as well as helping children improve their Internet literacy to protect themselves from harmful information. One of the teaching materials provided on Yahoo! Kids is a set of guidelines called the ABC of Internet Manners, which outlines five rules for enjoying and using the Internet in an easy-to-understand way.

Workshops based on the ABC of Internet Manners were organized at a two-day seminar held at the Hiyoshi Campus of Keio University in February 2011, the seventh seminar of its kind*1. Participating parents and children used the iPhone to learn the rules of the Internet that it is recommended that children learn before starting using the Internet and mobile phones.

Promoting the safe use of the Internet

Yahoo Japan Corporation

Yahoo Japan and NetSTAR Inc. jointly started a Study Group on the Use of the Internet by Children in April 2008 to conduct an in-depth study of the effects of the Internet on children with support from educational institutions, researchers and representatives of parents. This study group promotes the safe use of the Internet by providing information to parents and education professionals. The information includes the Internet Safety Guide for Parents, a teaching resource for parents that the study group creates and distributes free of charge. Symposiums and seminars are also organized in cooperation with municipalities and educational institutions.
