Collecting used mobile handsets for recycling

SOFTBANK MOBILE Corp.

As a member of the Mobile Recycle Network (MRN) of the Telecommunications Carriers Association, which collects used mobile and PHS handsets for recycling, SOFTBANK MOBILE promotes the collection of used mobile and PHS handsets, battery packs, chargers and USIM cards, regardless of their mobile communications operators and manufacturers. To make it easier for people to bring in their used handsets for recycling, collection boxes for used handsets have been placed at approximately 1,300*1 SoftBank shops across the nation. The used handsets are broken physically by a punching tool before recycling process in order to protect personal information. This prevents the leaking of personal information, so that people feel confident about recycling.

Rare metal extracted through manual dismantling, destruction, melting and other processing at recycling facilities is reused for parts of electronics or other goods. SOFTBANK MOBILE continues to strive to raise the recognition of mobile handset recycling with brochures and at events in order to encourage more customers to participate in recycling.

Reducing paper use associated with mobile handset sales

SOFTBANK MOBILE Corp.

SOFTBANK MOBILE has been working to reduce its use of paper by introducing electronic application form for mobile phone contracts and online bill information, an electronic form of invoice accessible from SoftBank mobile phones and PC via the Internet. At SoftBank shops, traditional paper brochures and catalogs are being replaced by iPad to explain products and services to customers starting from March 2011.

Packaging used for mobile handsets has also been downsized gradually. In the handsets launched after April 2010, the volume of paper used per package was reduced by about 35% year on year. Besides, starting from December 2009, the roughly 140-page user manual was replaced by Quick Start pamphlet, which shows new and frequently used functions in only 16 pages, reducing its use of paper significantly. Moreover, for further cutback on paper, digitized manuals come with two SMARTPHONEs, GALAPAGOS SoftBank 003SH and GALAPAGOS SoftBank 005SH launched in December 2010 and in February 2011 respectively.

Promoting ecology together with local people and spectators

Fukuoka SOFTBANK HAWKS Corp.

Fukuoka SOFTBANK HAWKS formed the Declaration on the Environment in Hawks Village in collaboration with Miyazaki-City Tourism Association and started efforts to create “the cleanest camp in Japan” together with spectators and local shop owners in 2008. In the spring camp 2011, the forth year of the effort, Fukuoka SOFTBANK HAWKS used recyclable containers and dishes, and asked the spectators for cooperation to use its Eco Station, deployed at the camp site for trash separation and collection to promote recycling waste generated at the camp. Pet bottles collected at the Eco Station in the spring camp 2010 were recycled and used for ornamental panels at the camp site.

In addition, use of public transportation to the camp was promoted as well as use of green electricity to prevent global warming. Also, smoking areas are fully separated from non-smoking areas to create a camp comfortable and safe for spectators.
